Aleph One

Aleph One is the open source sequel of Bungie’s Marathon 2 game engine. An open source software is one which is free and whose backbone- information on how it was made, how it can be edited and improved, is widely available for anyone to check and possibly develop.

The Marathon  game on which it was patterned is based on a futuristic story aboard the United Earth Space Council (UESC) Marathon, a large, multi-generational colony spacecraft. It takes place in the year 2794 when the player, taking the role of a security officer, tries to protect the ship and another nearby colony from the invasion of violent extraterrestrial creatures.

Aleph One game engine can also play Marathon 2: Durandal, Infinity and other 3rd party games on different platforms. Marathon 2: Durandal is a single player game where players look for an old ally to help them defeat the Pfhor Empire, an alien race trying to invade the ship. Infinity on the other hand, offers more multiplayer modes, wherein the player tries to change the past to avoid the collapse of the universe. There are terminals in the game interface where the instructions are shown, such as a portal to display the story. The ship where the action happens is also equipped with an artificial intelligence called Leela who gives players their missions through terminals.
