Virtual Villagers 5: New Believers is a casual computer game where the player acts as a god to help the explorers survive in a new environment. In this game, explorers (chosen by the player) are ambushed by the natives of Isola Island. These natives take the explorers as their prisoners. The player must help these explorers survive the island, as well as turn the natives into his faithful believers.

Virtual Villagers 5: New Believers starts by giving the player the task of building a food bin for the villagers. This can be done by making one from the branches scattered around the playing field. Structures that can be built at the start of the game include houses and a place for child-rearing. This can be done by clicking on the villagers and moving them to the building materials in the environment. The child population can be used to collect mushrooms, food, items, and so on. Some items, like the relics, can be used so the player can unleash god-like powers. The game's map can be used to view the entire village, giving the player a view of what is happening in the village. Some areas in the village cannot be accessed at the start of the game. Totems protect these areas, which must be disassembled by your believers.
