LightScribe

LightScribe is an optical disc recording software that is used to etch labels on recordable discs during the burning process. The software utilizes a special optical disc drive and specially coated recordable CDs, DVDs, or Blu-Ray discs. Lightscribe was first introduced to the market in 2004. It lets users personalize and customize discs with text and graphics using the optical disc drive’s laser.

LightScribe-compatible discs are coated with a dye that reacts to the laser and changes color as it absorbs about 780 nm laser light. The process is done by preparing a disc design first and proceeding to burn the data. Once the burning process completes, the disc is flipped over to burn the LightScribe label. It is possible to add more designs on a disc that has already been burned.

The LightScribe labeling process burns from the center of the disc moving outwards. It burns in concentric circles. LightScribe discs also contain a special code containing information for the disc drive to know the precise position of the disc allowing it to label the disc surface while spinning at high speed.  LightScribe also allows you to burn the same label multiple times to darken and improve the quality of the design.
