Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a security and assistant tool that helps users in setting up and configuring protection or security on wireless local area networks (LAN). The target users are home owners and office employees. Aside from configuring wireless LANs, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) also mainly features the option to add new devices as it secures anything added. The default setting is automatic, but users may modify its setting as preferred.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is usually integrated in many products that are associated with Internet connectivity and networking. That implies that any product installed in the computer must be compatible with WPS and Wi-Fi Protected Access or WPA security. Once successfully installed, it automatically sets up a network name or SSID by random. It also enables the wireless security function for computers, wireless routers, Wi-Fi capable phones, and access points, as well as other compatible devices.

There are four usage modes of the security function of Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). These are PIN Method, Push Button Method, Near-Field-Communication Method, and USB Method. For PIN Method, users create their own personal identification number or PIN, and this is used to access a network with restrictions. It means others who only know the PIN number can be connected and gain access to the network. The Push Button Method is used to push a button (actual or virtual) on the new wireless client device, and access point. Near-Field-Communication Method is for enabling a near-field-communication between the computer and another compatible device. The USB Method is to allow the use of a USB flash drive to connect to the device and the access point of the network.
