StepMania is a rhythm video game that simulates the arcade game Dance Dance Revolution. The application supports different game input devices, such as a joystick and a dance pad. However, users can also play the game using the keyboard. The aim of the game is to score the most points by hitting the arrow keys at the right time. Arrows start falling from the top of the screen and players must hit the corresponding arrow keys as they align with the static arrows at the bottom of the screen. There are different types of songs available to play in the game. Points are awarded as letters in the game. The highest ranking in the game is AAAA.

The program supports several input options, too. Adapters can be used so that the game can be played on the PS2 and Xbox game consoles. In the game, users can create their own dance patterns with the step editor. Also, background animations can be used while playing the game.
