Alice: Madness Returns is a psychological horror adventure game that was first released in 2011. It is the sequel to the game American McGee’s Alice. The storyline continues from the previous game and is set a year after Alice was released from Rutledge Asylum. Alice hallucinates and is back in Wonderland where she must beat the Doll Maker.
In the game, players assume the role of Alice. The main weapon that she uses for combat is a kitchen knife. She also has other tools including a pepper grinder that becomes a gun, teapot cannon, and a hobby horse used as sledgehammer. Players can upgrade Alice’s weapons by collecting teeth scattered around different locations. Alice also uses a parasol as a shield. Alice’s life is represented by petals. When there are no more rose petals left, players must go back to the latest save point and start over. There are different items that the player can encounter and collect during the game. These are:
• Pig Snout – Pig snouts can reveal collectibles for the player. The pig snout can be eliminated by seasoning them with pepper.
• Bottled – Bottles can appear in white and gold. These bottles unlock artwork related to the chapter where the bottle is found
• Memories – Memories appear like crystals in the game. These are snippets of dialogue from different people in Alice’s life.
• Radula Rooms – These are secret rooms where Alice must do a mission. Alice gains a paint pot for each mission completed. Upon collecting four paint pots, Alice’s life increases.
After completing the game, players unlock a game mode called New Game Plus. This allows the user to start the game over with all the weapons that were collected by finishing the game.
