Mixxx is an application that allows users to mix music from the computer. It specializes in beatmatching, a DJing technique wherein a track is manipulated by shifting the pitch or stretching the time of the track. To start mixing music, users can drop a song on the deck. The deck has a scratch table and a waveform that marks points on the track. Another feature of the program is time stretch and vinyl emulation. Users can speed up or slow down tracks without affecting the pitch. Mixxx supports a wide range of file formats including MP3, AIFF, WAVE, FLAC and Ogg Vorbis.

The software can also be used to organize music. Users can create playlists, and import tracks from the iTunes library. Also, the disk-browsing feature allows users to import music from external hard disks. Mixxx has a feature called Auto DJ, which automatically creates a playlist for seamless playback.
