The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a role-playing videogame developed by SnowBlind Studios and was released in November 2011. A role-playing game (RPG) is a video game genre where player would get to control a character and guide its actions and decisions that would affect the story of the game. Other features of role-playing games include a customizable character profile, an inventory and equipment system, level /rank increase, skill types, and character classes. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is has its story and characters based on the Lord of the Rings books by J.R.R. Tolkien and features several places depicted in the Lord of the Rings film franchise. The game incorporates an epic fantasy world with different races and its own unique language.
In The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, players would get to choose between three characters that fall into three different classes: Ranger/rogue, Loremaster/mage, and the Champion/warrior. The game has three protagonists:
• Eradan the Ranger – this character is adept in hand-to-hand combat using swords, shields, and a bow. Eradan has special stealth abilities that enable him to kill enemies undetected.
• Farin the Champion - this character has great strength and skill in heavy melee weapons such as axes and hammers. Farin also uses a crossbow for ranged attacks and has the ability to mine gems.
• Andriel the Loremaster – this character focuses on magic spells. She can cast offensive spells that could damage the enemy or defensive/support spells that could boost the party’s fighting capability. This character can also create potions from ingredients found within the game.
The game environment features locations that are based in the books and movies. These include Ettenmoors, Fornost, Mirkwood, Mount Gundabad, Bree, and Rivendell. In addition, players would get to encounter characters such as Aragorn, Arwen, Legolas, Bilbo, Frodo, Elrond, and Gandalf.
