Alabama Smith in Escape from Pompeii is a hidden object adventure game in which players assume the role of archaeology student Alabama Smith. The goal of the game is to find the Amulet of the Ages, which is a valuable artifact that was said to give its owner the ability to travel through different points in time. As Alabama, the player is given the study to study abroad in Naples, Italy. Alabama’s mentor is the one who tells the player about the mysterious amulet that is believed to be buried somewhere in the ruins of historic Pompeii, which was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted centuries ago.

Players begin the game in a university library where they must first locate a hidden room. Players must solve different puzzles by finding different items and using some of these with other found objects. The player’s tasks are listed at the bottom of the screen next to the inventory.

The game can be played in either Casual or Expert mode. In the casual mode, players are given a list of the items that must be found, and the game also offers helpful tips on how to use some items. Players can also skip minigames and the hints refill every 30 seconds. In the expert mode, players have to find objects in a scene and they must also figure out how these can best be used to accomplish tasks and solve puzzles. Minigames and puzzles cannot be skipped, and the hints take around 45 seconds to refill.
