Diogenes is a language application that assists users in looking up and translating Latin and Greek text published in databases by the Packard Humanities Institute and the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae. With this application, users can search and browse the online resources and databases by the two entities for Latin and Greek words, phrases, and expressions. Users would have to have Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the Packard Humanities Institute databases installed before they can use this application.
This translation assistant provides users with detailed explanations of word or phrase meaning, including morphological analysis. Users can also click on passages to see their context, which is important when translating from classical Latin or Greek (such as when a word is used, and when it is not).
To search for a word, users can simply type in a word or phrase in Latin or Greek and Diogenes will list down all of the matching dictionary headwords in the database. Users can then click on a headword and see its definition and inflections. Another feature f this application is its ability to limit searches to authors and their works, which is useful when users want to locate a certain passage.
Diogenes also comes with a built-in browser to enable users to access information on a passage’s author, book source, and other works related to it.
