FreePOPs is a mail proxy program with extensible properties. The program is primarily a POP3 daemon with an integrated Lua interpreter and added libraries for HTML and HTTP parsing. It is designed to translate local POP3 requests into remote HTTP tasks on web clients. Its primary usage is to enable downloading and checking of emails from various webmails via the POP3 protocol without using a web browser. This enables users to retrieve emails from different email clients such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, and others without the need to login through that email client’s http page.
The program can be used in various situations such as reading mails when the port 110 is closed due to a firewall, and accessing mailbox with mail providers that do not have POP3 protocol support. Aside from this, the program is also compliant with POP3 server RFC.
FreePOPs’ functionality can be extended through plug-ins. For instance, there is a built-in plug-in specifically designed to allow website news to be received as emails. These plug-ins are already integrated in the program (i.e. abv.lua, davmail.lua, aol.lua, aggregator.lua, fastmail.lua, and more). Aside from these built-in plug-ins, users may also add functionality to the program by downloading third-party plug-ins.
