Lavasoft Ad-Aware is a security application that makes use of two security technologies (anti-virus and anti-spyware) to ensure that the computer remains free of threats. The application is automatically updated several times daily to protect computer files from the latest threats. Ad-Aware protects the computer in real-time. It monitors incoming and outgoing traffic, and detects and monitors activities in the system. It alerts the user whenever there are detected threats or if there are any attempts on changing files in the registry.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware also provides security for online activities. It comes with a download protection that scans all downloaded files to ensure that there are no files that can damage the system. The Email Protection feature monitors incoming and outgoing e-mails and attachments. It supports popular email clients, such as Thunderbird, Eudora, Windows Mail, Outlook Express, etc. Another feature is Safe Browsing, which monitors the surfing activity and scans for blacklisted websites. The Safe Browsing engine frequently checks a database of reported bad sites to provide real-time protection.
