Sid Meier's Railroads! is a business simulation video game by Firaxis Games. It is a direct sequel to the Railroad Tycoon 3 and was initially launched on October 2006 in North America. The game is available in single player mode and multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode is where users can play over the Internet or LAN and it supports up to four players. The game is a 3-dimensional and more like a head-to-head RTS as compared to earlier versions. The focus of the game is on economics, wherein the player’s goal is building and sustaining the whole industries using the developed railroads.
This edition offers a new system wherein it first auctions the new technology to the highest bidder. The winning bidder gets a 10-year exclusive usage of the technology. Individual industries are also auctions among the players. The game also features automatic tracklaying. When this feature is combined with compressed terrain, placing the tracks tactically is possible. This enables players to frustrate and obstruct opponents.
Like earlier versions, Sid Meier's Railroads! features a total of 15 historical scenarios focusing in different regions like the Southwestern United States, Pacific Northwest, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The game enables players to take the roles of different popular robber barons and railway tycoons like J.P. Morgan. The game also features different industries, which depends on the timeframe and location. For instance, United States scenarios offer gold and oil products while European scenarios offer dairy products, beer and wine products. Creating custom maps is also possible.
