Steins; Gate is a Japanese visual novel game where the player has to travel through time. The game features non-linear gameplay wherein the player has vital choices to make, which can affect the outcome of the game. At some points in the game, the player reaches certain points where he can decide between a number of choices. Whatever the player chooses generally affects the game’s events and the ending. These points happen during “phone triggers.” In phone triggers, the user receives a call to either answer or ignore. The text messages that the user receives have some keywords that are either underlined or highlighted. While these can be ignored, the text messages can trigger certain actions or change the course of the game depending on how the player responds. The player can play the game numerous times to find out the outcome of different choices.
The game is set in the year 2010. Specifically, it follows the story of Chaos; Head, the previous game in the series. The location is Akihabara in Japan. Majority of the game revolves around the concept of time-travel. The main characters travel back in time to change the future events.
