Ultralingua is software that allows users to translate across different languages such as English, Esperanto, French, German, Haitian Creole, Italian, Klingon, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Its main features include the dictionary, conjugations, numbers, flashcards, word hunt, and references.
Ultralingua’s dictionary section allows the user to type the word or a fragment of the word and then provide a list of matches. It does not only list related to the word typed but also some similar words. In this way, it helps users in case they are not sure of the spelling. The user can then click on the word to view a specific entry. The software also allows users to add words by simply clicking on the plus button on the interface and typing the word, choosing the part of speech, or the type of word. For those learning a language for the first time, conjugation is made easier by conjugating the words automatically. The user must select the tense (past, present, etc) from a pop-up menu and the software will conjugate it.
Aside from words and words fragment, numbers are also supported. For instance, if the user types in 100, the software will display one hundred on the screen. The flashcards functionality is useful for practice sessions, as it allows users to create flashcards of words they want to practice and automatically connect it to the definition available. The reference module is presented on two sections: Grammar and Correspondence. The Grammar portion focuses more on grammar rules while the Correspondence part focuses more on the elements of formal communication, such as rules for creating invitations, employment queries, and resumes.
